Holi and Bollywood

Posted on March 19, 2008. Filed under: Videos |

Bhang, Colors, white dresses, drums, song and dance…..blend all these together and what you get is colorful recipe called holibolly (that’s Holi in Bollywood). Frankly can you imagine Holi in Hindi films without any of these? I dedicate this recipe to Bollywood that has portrayed the mood of Holi time and again.

Holi is the only festival in India where one has the open rights to flirt and do all the nasty things. And it’s the Bhang (I shall call it the energy drink) that sets the mood right. It’s only after gulping down glasses of Bhang, the hero of film gets charged up to get up close with his heroine. Don’t agree with me? What propelled Amitabh to flirt ? Bhang! Again it’s the Bhang that increased the energy levels of sh…sh….sh shahrukh and he scared the hell out of Juhi in Darr. Hope you are convinced now.

What’s Holi without colors? Heaps of colors spread out on the ground make an integral part of the Holi song. And then there are these junior artists who would throw colors in air and kick these heaps of colors to kick off the song. In any other song sequence hero and heroine would have a different costume and the all the other artist would have the same dress code. But what about the dress code for the Holi song? As we know Holi is a festival of unity. So everyone has the same dress code. Though this rarely happens in real life but in reel life if it’s Holi everyone has to be in white dress. Don’t ask me why. Guess it’s more fun to splash colors on white dress. Have you ever seen a heroine with lots of color of her clothes and body especially her face? Naah. Have you gone Insane? Why would she spoil her make up? Sadly it’s only the heroes whom we see with lots of colors over their body and the heroine always has very small patches of color here and there….not fair haan….

Now we have put in Bhang, colors, white dress remaining to be added is drums, song and dance. In India, celebrations cannot be complete without songs….Songs are the essential part of celebrations in Indian culture. Bollywood caught this nerve and there was time when a films success was decided on the success of its music. Films did cash on the Holi songs and till date we have a huge collection of Holi songs. Think of a Holi song. Quick, Quick, I know what you have in your mind. Yes the first song that comes to your mind is Rang Barse. Imagine a Holi party without this song.Oh! Your party would be incomplete without it. Nothing can beat the magic of Rang Barse from the Silsila. Post Silsila Chopras continued with Holi Numbers is many films. Be it O dekho Holi aayi in Mashaal or the Ang se ang lagana in Darr. Aditya Chopra followed the foot steps of his father. His film Mohabbatein had an elaborate Holi song and dance sequence. Holi khere raghubeera featuring Mr.Bachchan and Hema Malini from Ravi Chopra’s Baghban made it to the hit list. Last Holi song that I can remember is Lets play Holi again from Amitabh starrer Waqt – Race against time.

And we are done with the recipe. Add a splash of color of your choice and relish it. Happy Holi!

Holi khere raghubeera……………

Little Wonders

Posted on February 3, 2008. Filed under: Videos |

If there was a time machine, I am sure many of us would just love to go back to the childhood. Sadly, in today’s highly competitive world children have lost their childhood. Right for the Montessori to the schools and colleges a child has to compete to match his steps with the world. And then there are few who are more talented than the other children whom we call Little Wonders. These Little Wonders do make big in life but at the cost of their childhood.

For instance, Darsheel Safary of Tare Zameen Par rejected the ‘Best Child Actor’ award saying he was the hero of the film and he should be nominated in the ‘Best Actor category’. Absolutely no doubt, Darsheel’s performance in Taare Zameen Par was par excellence and hats off to you Darsheel for such a brilliant performance. But, But, But……. Darsheel is just eight year old child. He is star now and has graduated from a child to the Best Actor in such a tender age. New found success and stardom has outshone his childhood.

Darsheel is not the only one in this race. From past we have seen Tabassum, Sachin, Urmila Matondkar , Aftab Shivdasani, Kunal Khemu, Jugal Hansraj, Hansika Motwani and many others. Everyone went through the same phase what Darsheel is going through now. Leave films alone, with media spreading its wings more children are engulfed in this world of instant stardom. Don’t agree with me? Watch Chotte Ustad on Star plus and Lil Wonders on Zee. Grueling practice sessions, rehearsals, shows and more shows. After the show if the child has performed badly then he has had it from the judges even may be from his family members. The child is showered with praises and what not if the performance is good. He is taken into the dreamland. Life is not a dreamland and when the child opens his eyes to reality it’s too late. He has gone through lot by then. In both the situation it’s the child who suffers. Only the child knows what he is going through. Spare the child please.

The greed for stardom has subdued children’s innocence and their love for small things either by the child himself or by his family or by the mighty media. Whom do we blame? While there are many who cherish their childhood, these ‘Little Wonders’ may remain void of their childhood.

T-Mobile Shadow (sage)

Posted on November 30, 2007. Filed under: Videos |

Product summary
The good: The T-Mobile Shadow offers a fresh take on Windows Mobile smartphones, with a sleek slider design and interface. The entry-level device also has an affordable price tag and features a beautiful display; Bluetooth and Wi-Fi; a 2-megapixel camera; and various messaging capabilities.

The bad: The call quality of the Shadow could be better, particularly the speakerphone. The navigation wheel is slippery, and performance can be sluggish when numerous apps are in use.

The bottom line: For the young professionals who have outgrown their cell phone but aren’t quite ready for a business-centric device, the T-Mobile Shadow offers a nice compromise, as the entry-level smartphone brings the capabilities of a Windows Mobile smartphone into a fresh and affordable package.

2007 Holiday Notebook Buying Guide

Posted on November 27, 2007. Filed under: Videos |

The holidays are upon us and there are a lot of notebooks out there to choose from. NotebookReview.com has covered more than 100 new notebooks since January of this year, so it’s no surprise that holiday shoppers feel overwhelmed by the choices. The latest and greatest laptop computers bring updates to previous models and some completely new designs, so we’re going to give you a leg up on some good notebook picks for this season.

To make it easy, we’ve decided to organize the notebooks primarily by price, but have added a couple of other categories for those of you who know the specific type of laptop you’re looking for. This isn’t a list of every notebook available … we just wanted to give you a list of some of the better notebook options. The best part about the notebook computer market is that regardless of your computer know-how or your budget, there is a laptop out there for you.

If you don’t find one that works for you in this list, or the last-minute holiday sales don’t have these exact models, just use our “What Notebook Should I Buy?” forum. Many times, there are other notebooks in the same product line or family that may be a better fit for you.

Good luck finding a laptop and have a great holiday season!

[ Less Than $500] [ $500-$1,000] [ $1,000-$1,500] [ $1,500-$2,000] [ Ultraportables/Subnotebooks] [General Use] [Gaming] [Business]

Less Than $500
Dell Vostro 1000 – The Vostro 1000 is a budget notebook offered from Dell’s business line, but it has quickly become one of the most popular consumer notebooks for people looking for a budget notebook. Available with a range of AMD processors, integrated graphics, no bloatware, and your choice of Windows Vista or XP, the Vostro 1000 is a solid deal.
Vostro 1000 Reviews and Pricing

HP Compaq Presario V6500Z – The V6500Z is part of HP’s budget Compaq line of notebooks. Featuring AMD processors, integrated graphics and a stylish design, the V6500Z uses many of the same components as HP’s dv6500t and dv6500z series for a fraction of the cost.
Compaq V6500Z Reviews and Pricing

Asus Eee PC 4G – The new and highly anticipated Asus Eee PC is a budget-priced subnotebook that has already become the best-selling laptop for the 2007 holiday shopping season. This tiny notebook with a 7-inch screen isn’t designed to replace a standard notebook or desktop computer, but it’s remarkably full-featured and comes pre-loaded with everything an average consumer needs for wirelessly browsing the web, getting work done while traveling, or having a bit of fun. Priced at less than $400, this is the least expensive subnotebook we’ve ever seen.
Asus Eee PC Reviews and Pricing

$500-$1,000
HP Pavilion dv2500t – The Pavilion dv2500t is a solid update to HP’s stylish dv2000t series of laptops. The dv2500t brings better processors and improved graphics options … and even in the budget configurations this notebook is hard to beat in its price range.
HP dv2500t Reviews and Pricing

Dell Vostro 1500 – One of the most popular notebooks in Dell’s new Vostro line of business notebooks, the 1500 is virtually identical to the Dell Inspiron 1520 … at a fraction of the price.
Dell Vostro 1500 Reviews and Pricing

Sony VAIO NR – Sony notebooks have never been considered budget friendly until earlier this year when Sony announced the new VAIO NR series. With multiple configurations priced at less than $1,000 the NR has quickly become a favorite for consumers who always wanted a Sony notebook but couldn’t afford one until now.
Sony VAIO NR Reviews and Pricing

——————————————————————————–

$1,000-$1,500
Dell XPS M1330 – Dell made a serious effort in 2007 to listen to customer feedback criticizing Dell’s older, thick and heavy laptops. The result is the amazingly thin and light XPS M1330, one of the sexiest looking notebooks of 2007. With a slot-loading optical drive, 13-inch display, and a full range of high-performance features, the M1330 is an impressive gift option for a loved one … or for yourself.
Dell XPS M1330 Reviews and Pricing

Apple MacBook – Thanks to the mess that Microsoft made out of Windows Vista, Apple has seen a solid increase in the number consumers switching from PCs to Macs this year. The MacBook is Apple’s “budget” laptop even if the entry-level price is more than $1,000. The Mac OS X (Leopard) operating system is simple and trouble free compared to Windows, so if you need a laptop that won’t give you a headache the MacBook is an excellent choice.

Apple MacBook Pro – Everything we just said about the MacBook applies to its big brother, the MacBook Pro. The biggest difference between the MacBook and the MacBook Pro, besides the price, is the choice of faster processors and dedicated graphics. Overall, if you need a laptop with more performance then the MacBook Pro is the way to go.

Lenovo ThinkPad X61 – The Lenovo ThinkPad X61 is an ultraportable business laptop geared to individuals who demand the best. Like its larger brothers of the ThinkPad line, it shares all of the same rugged features, as well as the creature comforts of a full-size keyboard. The X61 looks as if Lenovo took a ThinkPad T60 and shrunk it down by 30 percent. Although it is much smaller than its counterparts, it is every bit as fast. Light business travelers can rest easy knowing they didn’t sacrifice anything but weight when they bring the X61 on the road.

100 Ways to Save The Environment

Posted on November 10, 2007. Filed under: Videos |

In Your Home – Conserve Energy

1. Clean or replace air filters on your air conditioning unit at least once a month.
2. If you have central air conditioning, do not close vents in unused rooms.
3. Lower the thermostat on your water heater to 120.
4. Wrap your water heater in an insulated blanket.
5. Turn down or shut off your water heater when you will be away for extended periods.
6. Turn off unneeded lights even when leaving a room for a short time.
7. Set your refrigerator temperature at 36 to 38 and your freezer at 0 to 5 .
8. When using an oven, minimize door opening while it is in use; it reduces oven temperature by 25 to 30 every time you open the door.
9. Clean the lint filter in your dryer after every load so that it uses less energy.
10. Unplug seldom used appliances.
11. Use a microwave when- ever you can instead of a conventional oven or stove.
12. Wash clothes with warm or cold water instead of hot.
13. Reverse your indoor ceiling fans for summer and winter operations as recommended.
14. Turn off lights, computers and other appliances when not in use.
15. Purchase appliances and office equipment with the Energy Star Label; old refridgerators, for example, use up to 50 more electricity than newer models.
16. Only use electric appliances when you need them.
17. Use compact fluorescent light bulbs to save money and energy.
18. Keep your thermostat at 68 in winter and 78 in summer.
19. Keep your thermostat higher in summer and lower in winter when you are away
20. Insulate your home as best as you can.
21. Install weather stripping around all doors and windows.
22. Shut off electrical equipment in the evening when you leave work.
23. Plant trees to shade your home.
24. Shade outside air conditioning units by trees or other means.
25. Replace old windows with energy efficient ones.
26. Use cold water instead of warm or hot water when possible.
27. Connect your outdoor lights to a timer.
28. Buy green electricity – electricity produced by low – or even zero-pollution facilities (NC Greenpower for North Carolina – www.ncgreenpower.org). In your home-reduce toxicity.

In Your Home – Reduce Toxicity

29. Eliminate mercury from your home by purchasing items without mercury, and dispose of items containing mercury at an appropriate drop-off facility when necessary (e.g. old thermometers).
30. Learn about alternatives to household cleaning items that do not use hazardous chemicals.
31. Buy the right amount of paint for the job.
32. Review labels of household cleaners you use. Consider alternatives like baking soda, scouring pads, water or a little more elbow grease.
33. When no good alternatives exist to a toxic item, find the least amount required for an effective, sanitary result.
34. If you have an older home, have paint in your home tested for lead. If you have lead-based paint, cover it with wall paper or other material instead of sanding it or burning it off.
35. Use traps instead of rat and mouse poisons and insect killers.
36. Have your home tested for radon.
37. Use cedar chips or aromatic herbs instead of mothballs.

In Your Yard

38. Avoid using leaf blowers and other dust-producing equipment.
39. Use an electric lawn- mower instead of a gas-powered one.
40. Leave grass clippings on the yard-they decompose and return nutrients to the soil.
41. Use recycled wood chips as mulch to keep weeds down, retain moisture and prevent erosion.
42. Use only the required amount of fertilizer.
43. Minimize pesticide use.
44. Create a wildlife habitat in your yard.
45. Water grass early in the morning.
46. Rent or borrow items like ladders, chain saws, party decorations and others that are seldom used.
47. Take actions that use non hazardous components (e.g., to ward off pests, plant marigolds in a garden instead of using pesticide).
48. Put leaves in a compost heap instead of burning them or throwing them away. Yard debris too large for your compost bin should be taken to a yard-debris recycler.

In Your Office

49. Copy and print on both sides of paper.
50. Reuse items like envelopes, folders and paper clips.
51. Use mailer sheets for interoffice mail instead of an envelope.Use mailer sheets for interoffice mail instead of an envelope.
52. Set up a bulletin board for memos instead of sending a copy to each employee.
53. Use e-mail instead of paper correspondence.
54. Use recycled paper.
55. Use discarded paper for scrap paper.
56. Encourage your school and/or company to print documents with soy-based inks, which are less toxic.
57. Use a ceramic coffee mug instead of a disposable cup.

Ways To Protect Our Air

58. Ask your employer to consider flexible work schedules or telecommuting.
59. Recycle printer cartridges.
60. Shut off electrical equipment in the evening when you leave work.
61. Report smoking vehicles to your local air agency.
62. Don’t use your wood stove or fireplace when air quality is poor.
63. Avoid slow-burning, smoldering fires. They produce the largest amount of pollution.
64. Burn seasoned wood – it burns cleaner than green wood.
65. Use solar power for home and water heating.
66. Use low-VOC or water-based paints, stains, finishes and paint strippers.
67. Purchase radial tires and keep them properly inflated for your vehicle.
68. Paint with brushes or rollers instead of using spray paints to minimize harmful emissions.
69. Ignite charcoal barbecues with an electric probe or other alternative to lighter fluid.
70. If you use a wood stove, use one sold after 1990. They are required to meet federal emissions standards and are more efficient and cleaner burning.
71. Walk or ride your bike instead of driving, whenever possible.
72. Join a carpool or vanpool to get to work.

Ways to Use Less Water

73. Check and fix any water leaks.
74. Install water-saving devices on your faucets and toilets.
75. Don’t wash dishes with the water running continuously.
76. Wash and dry only full loads of laundry and dishes.
77. Follow your community’s water use restrictions or guidelines.
78. Install a low-flow shower head.
79. Replace old toilets with new ones that use a lot less water.
80. Turn off washing machine’s water supply to prevent leaks.

Ways to Protect Our Water

81. Revegetate or mulch disturbed soil as soon as possible.
82. Never dump anything down a storm drain.
83. Have your septic tank pumped and system inspected regularly.
84. Check your car for oil or other leaks, and recycle motor oil.
85. Take your car to a car wash instead of washing it in the driveway.
86. Learn about your watershed.

Create Less Trash

87. Buy items in bulk from loose bins when possible to reduce the packaging wasted.
88. Avoid products with several layers of packaging when only one is sufficient. About 33 of what we throw away is packaging.
89. Buy products that you can reuse.
90. Maintain and repair durable products instead of buying new ones.
91. Check reports for products that are easily repaired and have low breakdown rates.
92. Reuse items like bags and containers when possible.
93. Use cloth napkins instead of paper ones.
94. Use reusable plates and utensils instead of disposable ones.
95. Use reusable containers to store food instead of aluminum foil and cling wrap.
96. Shop with a canvas bag instead of using paper and plastic bags.
97. Buy rechargeable batteries for devices used frequently.
98. Reuse packaging cartons and shipping materials. Old newspapers make great packaging material.
99. Compost your vegetable scraps.
100. Buy used furniture – there is a surplus of it, and it is much cheaper than new furniture.

20 References you can’t live without apart from wikipedia

Posted on September 25, 2007. Filed under: Videos |

  • Bartleby – This site has far more than quotes, you can find full texts here as well – poetry in particular.Citizendium – This is supposed to be the more “professional” Wikipedia. So far it’s not really taken off, but the information here is often a bit more “elite” but usually not as detailed.Answers.com – Answers.com is a sort of “commercial” Wikipedia. It makes use of the info on Wikipedia, combined with many other reference sties, to become a one stop shop. It also has a mobile site that I tend to use a great deal.ePodunk – If you’re looking for information regarding a city or place, it doesn’t get much better than ePodunk.
  • Encylopedia Britannica – I know it seems awfully “old school” but this site is an excellent source of information and much more authoritative than Wikipedia.
  • Scholarpedia – A step up from both Wikipedia and Citizendium in terms of scholarly respectability, it doesn’t have nearly as much information, but the articles have all been written by experts with peer review. An academic paradise!
  • Okay, two sources that your college probably gives you access to. If you aren’t a student, sorry… but these are too good to ignore. You’ll need to see your local school librarian to see how to access these (or you may have a library website you can access it through.)
  • JSTOR – You know all those stuffy journals around your professors office? And those articles in your course packets? This is pretty much that. For research it enormously useful.
  • Oxford English Dictionary – The definitive resource when it comes to the English language. Not just for English majors, the OED (as it’s known) is useful for almost anyone in the social sciences.
  • Wikiseek – When you absolutely, positively, must have the real thing – WikiSeek is Wikipedia with a better search engine. I would also suggest WikiMindMap for when you’re trying to get a better holistic grasp of a subject.

References for Specific Disciplines

  • Online Education Database – This is a strange site, and I’m not quite sure what to make of it – but this link lists over 100 specific search and research tools, often relevant to specific subjects.
  • MathWorld – if you have the great misfortune of having to take math, then this site can be of great help. Everything mathematics from Geometry to Calculus is covered by this site in great detail.
  • GeoHive and Fedstats – These are both statistics sites, so if you need to know how many people. Fedstats allows public access to public agency statistics. Geohive is a bit cooler, primarily providing global statistics (gender populations, coal reserves, etc). I know, it’s so exciting I can’t stand it.
  • Theoi and Encyclopedia of Mythology – Both excellent resources on the subject of mythology and ancient religions. This is useful information all across the humanities.
  • Glossary of Poetic Forms – This will help you get through that English Literature class. You too can know the difference between a Canto and a Cento.
  • Now, if you’re in my fields – these next three are excellent resources.
  • Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy and Foldop – Both of these are excellent sources on just about anything philosophy related. I use the Stanford site all the time.
  • Religion Online – If you are a scholar of religion this is an excellent, excellent resource filled with many primary texts.
